Praetura Ventures Appoints Mark Roberts As Operational Partner

Colin Greene and Mark Roberts

Praetura Ventures, a Manchester, UK-based venture capital firm, has named Mark Roberts as its latest operational partner following the announcement of its fund management role for the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II – Equity North West (£100m).

The role will see Roberts support Praetura’s portfolio of early-stage businesses, from customer success to business strategy, and recruitment to C-suite hires.

Praetura established the operational partner program in 2021 after seeing a lack of expert-led mentorship and support for early-stage businesses in the North of England. Roberts will join Praetura’s seven other operational partners, including former Dr Marten’s chief human resources officer Helen Verwoert, former AO Group CEO Steve Caunce and former general counsel and company secretary for JD Siobhan Almond.

Roberts founded the online craft beer store Beer Hawk in 2012, which exited to AB InBev. In 2019, he became Global CEO of the PerfectDraft business, which has become a direct-to-consumer player for AB InBev, before leaving in 2022. Before Beer Hawk, Roberts was marketing director for Laithwaites Wine and head of customer marketing at Lloyds Banking Group’s Insurance Division. He has also held senior leadership positions at HBOS Plc, Procter & Gamble and chaired the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership until 2023.

Praetura Ventures invests in early-stage, high-growth businesses across the UK, with a particular focus on supporting entrepreneurs across the North of England.   The firm also provised support for businesses to grow, including additional expertise, resources, networks and guidance, to its investee companies.

Since 2019, Praetura Ventures has backed 40 companies, including Northern-headquartered businesses Culture Shift, XR Games and Peak.

The firm also has a Venture Partner program – an innovative and collaborative initiative that is aimed at experienced, connected and successful individuals who have a desire to add value and potentially provide mentorship, advice, introductions and investment to the next generation of entrepreneurs. In just a few months, the firm has grown its Venture Partner base to 100+ members, typically C-suite level individuals.
